Hello, I’m Moo-yeon Kim, an ophthalmologist at GS eyecenter. Has the hospital that you had surgery ever disappeared? I had hemorrhoids surgery a long time ago, but a year later, I went to a regular checkup and the hospital was gone. That’s why people prefer large hospitals where medical records remain even if the doctor in charge changes. I’ve been working at GS eyecenter for 18 years. When the patients who had surgery came back for care 10 years later, they seemed more relieved and satisfied that there was still a eyecenter and the doctor was still treating them. Today, I’m going to tell you about lasik or lasek re-surgery. I’ll tell you some stories that you should know when considering the re-surgery.
Is it better to do re-surgery at the same eyecenter?
The most important thing is to operate so that myopia does not recur, but if it does, It is recommended to re-operate where there is a lot of first surgery information left. This is because each surgeon uses his or her own habits and skills. Sometimes I see a sign of surgery and know which doctor the patient had before telling. It’s kind of like a signature.
For example, the patient I operated on 10 years ago, I know what equipment I used and how I operated on at that time. But when another doctor sees the patient, it’s hard to know how he’s been operated before. It is not easy to infer the procedure of the surgery because all the surgical scars have healed. In addition, there are things that are difficult to write one by one in the record, especially the skills that each doctor has. During LASIK surgery, whether the laser knife went in horizontally or vertically once and then horizontally is not recorded
Even if you had LASIK surgery in the past, it is difficult to incision again, so if you decide to re-surgery with LASEK, the doctor is comfortable. But you might be upset if you had LASIK surgery that didn’t hurt before, but now you have LASEK surgery that hurts and takes a long time to recover. That’s why I prefer to find old scars well, perform surgery, and allow the patient to recover quickly.
Preservation criteria for medical records
Where will the surgery records and information go if the hospital disappears? If another doctor takes over an hospital, they will also take patient information according to the law. But if they are moved to another area after taking over the hospital, where and how should I check the information? By law, medical records must be kept for five years, and surgical records must be kept for 10 years. If it is difficult to manage information, such as closure, all records should be left to the Public Health Department. so when you need to find the records, you can find it by contacting your local health department.
Summary of re-surgery points
It is important to ensure that the vision does not fall again, but if it recurs, it should be treated well in a way that suits the symptoms. Compared to surgery with small incision, such as SMILE surgery, surgery that incisions a lot like LASIK often requires re-surgery as the incision weakens. If the cornea is thick, the doctor can find the scars of the surgery and perform a simple re-surgery with a laser. However, if the cornea is thin or when presbyopia comes, it is difficult to perform surgery to cut the cornea again because it is not safe. Therefore, it is solved by inserting a lens that corrects myopia and presbyopia together.
Is it possible that the patient can manage the surgical records? It is possible. It can also be a good way to store your records in a place like the cloud yourself. However, you don’t have to worry that you don’t have a past record because it’s more important for re-surgery to check your current eye condition than what you had a long time ago.
