When should I have cataract surgery?

Best time for cataract surgery

The lens, a transparent eye tissue, exists in the eye and acts as the main refractive organ of the eye. Light entering the eye is refracted as it passes through the lens, forming an image on the retina. Cataract is a disease in which this lens become cloudy and fail to pass light properly, making the field of view appear blurry as if it were foggy.

Cataract occurs in everyone over a certain age. However, the start and progress of cataract varies from person to person, so it is ambiguous when to treat them. In addition, people are more likely to neglect it because cataract is not metastatic or life-threatening disease. However, it is clear that cataract is not a disease that heals by itself, and as the cloudy lens becomes harder over time, the difficulty of surgery increases and the recovery period after surgery takes a long time. And cataract can cover the inside of the eye, making it difficult to see if there are other diseases in the eye.

If it recovers on its own after five years, there is no need for surgery. However, it is certain that the disease will continue to exist five years later, and it will be worse than it is now. So there’s no reason to let the cataract get worse and then operate after five years

Academics usually say that it is common to perform surgery between the ages of 55 and 65 when cataract occurs. If you go to an ophthalmologist to get surgery around the age of 85, many doctors are reluctant. It’s not easy to come forward because they know that surgery won’t fix it well. That’s why some patients experience inconvenience visiting different hospitals for surgery. In general, cataract surgery is not difficult for patients aged 55-65 and has relatively good physical strength, so they recover quickly with less possibility of complications or infection after surgery, so patients and doctors can get satisfactory results together. I think we can call this a golden time for cataract treatment.

Meanwhile, cataract surgery at a younger age should be prudent. Of course, cataract can occur at an early age due to severe atopy, rubbing eyes a lot, highly myopia, recurrence of uveitis several times, or trauma. There is no problem other than that, but it is problematic to operate earlier

eye drops for cataract treatment ?

There is an eye drop that suppresses the progression of cataract. But this drug has not been approved by the U.S. FDA. Also, the cover of this drug says cataract treatment, and no one has ever used it to treat cataract.

Unfortunately, there is currently no other treatment for cataract other than surgery. Even if you continue to use cataract medication, you should visit an ophthalmologist regularly to monitor your eye condition, and then one day you should have cataract surgery. So cataract drugs are actually not treatments, they should be called cataract inhibitors. I think the expression “cure” should be redefined because it can cause a big misunderstanding.
