Hello, I’m Moo-yeon Kim, an ophthalmologist, in gseyecenter. Today, we’re going to talk about glaucoma. People who suffer from glaucoma come to the hospital after belatedly noticing their symptoms. This disease does not improve well even with medicine. Why is that? I’ll tell you some stories that are good for people with glaucoma to know.
What is glaucoma?
When explaining glaucoma to many patients, comparing a bundle of optic nerves to a candle. If you light about 200 candles at once in a dark place, the surroundings will look very bright. These candles naturally go out two to three each year. If there are about 100 left because it has been reduced by half over time, it is not much brighter than before, but you still don’t feel a big problem because I can see the surroundings well.
But for various reasons, if the candles go out quickly and there are only about 20 left, you will feel a little darker than before. Even if there is only one candle left, you can see the surroundings, so you don’t take it seriously and think that your eyes are simply blurry.
For this reason, people who suffer from glaucoma often come to the hospital after the symptoms have progressed a lot.
What causes glaucoma?
It is known that humans are born with enough optic nerves to last 200 years. It is naturally damaged in life and disappears three to four every year. In addition, increased intraocular pressure or lack of oxygen in eye vessels cause optic nerve damage. That’s why patients have a narrower vision than before, and they can’t see well. Of course, vision at night is worse than at day. At this time, if they come to the hospital and get diagnosed with glaucoma, the disease progresses a lot, so there is not much a doctor can do.
If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, first try to reduce the pressure in your eyes as much as possible to prevent damage to the optic nerve. Sometimes, eye drops are used to lower the pressure, or during cataract surgery, the lens is replaced with a lens to lower the pressure. In addition, if there is a problem with physical pressure, a tube that discharges water is inserted into the eyeball. However, it is difficult to prevent all the optic nerve’s damage that progresses over time. Therefore, if you are diagnosed with glaucoma, you should think about taking good care of your condition so that it does not worsen in the future.
Glaucoma management, not treatment
Glaucoma is a difficult disease to use the words prevention, treatment, and recovery. Because damaged nerves don’t regenerate. Therefore, glaucoma is not a treatment, but it is best to manage the remaining optic nerves so that the damage progresses slowly.
However, many patients find it difficult to understand the concept of care, not treatment. Some people give up care easily, thinking that it is only stings when they put medicine, that the hospital fee is expensive, and that nothing gets better. It’s sad to say that glaucoma doesn’t get better no matter how much medicine you take. The purpose of using the drug is not to recover but to keep one’s eyesight from getting worse. It’s hard, but you have to take care of it to stay up late.
These days, early diagnosis of glaucoma is possible due to improved diagnosis technology, and if it is managed steadily, it does not progress to blindness. However, it seems that patients are having a hard time because it is a disease that remains in management, not treatment. If your family isn’t in constant care after being diagnosed with glaucoma, convince them that periodic testing and proper medication use are essential.
