Hello, I’m Moo-yeon Kim, an ophthalmologist at GS eyecenter. Today, I will tell you what is different between artificial tears, especially those prescribed at the hospital and those bought at a pharmacy without a prescription, and what you should be careful about when using these eye drops.
Types of Artificial Tears
The eye drops’ containers came in various shapes..
Typically, artificial tears prescribed by hospitals and clinics are in the form of transparent tubes and do not contain preservatives, so they can be used for single use. Then should these artificial tears be used only once and thrown away?
No, you can use them after opening the lid and put it back on and use them again in a day.
It is easy to contaminate because it does not contain preservatives, so it is recommended to use it only 24 times after the first use.
There are also general medicine artificial tears that can be purchased directly from pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription. The difference between the two is that the concentration of hyaluronic acid, the main component of artificial tears, is low. I’ve explained about hyaluronic acid several times before. It is an ingredient that helps replenish moisture and relieve wounds and is used as an adjuvant for ophthalmic surgery or for intra-articular injection. Prescribed artificial tears have a hyaluronic acid concentration of 0.15 to 0.18%, while pharmacies have a low hyaluronic acid concentration of 0.1%.
Watch out for eye drops like this!
Among the eye drops that can be purchased at pharmacies to relieve eye fatigue is a medicine that makes you feel cool when you put it in your eyes. If you use the medicine, you may feel that your fatigue is going away and your bloodshot will improve. The main ingredient of these eye drops is water-soluble vitamins. So you can feel the freshness when you put on your eyes.
However, one thing to be aware of when using these eye drops is that the pharmacological effect may not be significant. Also, if you don’t go to the hospital with these eye drops when you have a problem with your eyes, you may miss the timing of treatment for an important disease. So, you can just buy and use artificial tears, which are mainly hyaluronic acid, at pharmacies, but it is not recommended to use eye drops that do not help eye health because they contain other ingredients.
The story of a patient with instantaneous glue in her eyes.
Do you know Super glue? Surprisingly, there are often cases of patients who mistake it for eye drops and put it in their eyes. It makes eyelashes and eyelids stick together immediately. That is a pretty serious accident and can have a big operation.
I’m going to talk about the patient I had before
When glue gets into the eye and comes to the hospital, doctors must cut off the skin using fine scissors to see the condition of the eye. If the scissors touch the cornea, that is a big problem too. so the doctor should proceed with the operation carefully. When I opened the patient’s eyelids carefully and looked at his eyes, they was covered with glue and were white.
When exposed to chemical drugs, washing with water is a priority. When I used saline to wash it out gently, something like a white membrane moved little by little. The super glue was hardened on the cornea like a contact lens.
If it is separated well, there is no problem, but if it is removed incorrectly due to the adhesive component, the corneal epithelium could be seriously damaged.
So I used cold saline to make it as hard as possible, and after a lot of twists and turns, I was able to remove the lumps of super glue that were hardened. At this time, the damaged corneal epithelium had to be treated over several days.
It was a mistake caused by a momentary misunderstanding, but it was an accident with a crisis of blindness. The eyes are sensitive, and if you put it wrong, something big can happen. Therefore, make sure to look at what you put in your eyes and use them.
Is that really the eye drops you’re holding right now?
